Ovindoli
The origin of the name Ovindoli is still uncertain. Obindulum, Ovis, and Guindulum are some of the words that could potentially be the origin. The last
one is mentioned in 1387 in the form of Ovindulo, which is dialect for Guindulus. Guindulus appears to be the Latin version of the gothic word Windo
that means “Guindolo’s Land”. If the origin of the place-name is not know for certain, there is a popular saying in dialect that goes like this “Dvinnr fatt
a pHnnejH, piu’ jH rmir i piu’ parH bejH” (this is an approximate translation) which means: “Ovindoli, made with a paintbrush, the more you admire it, the
more it appears beautiful.”
Located between the massifs of Velino and Sirente, Ovindoli is the gateway to a beautiful highland. It is a modern winter sports resort town at an elevation
of 1375 meters, 35 km from L’Aquila, and 100 km from Rome and Pescara.
A day spent in Ovindoli can be a day of exciting experiences. During the winter, the magic of snow covered woods, the enchanting historical center
perched on the rock and the arabesque curve of tracks left from skis tracing down Mount Magnola, all combine to create the gorgeous portrait of the village.
Spring, Summer, and Fall in Ovindoli are a kaleidoscope of emotions: the sunlight shimmering behind the high crests, the sacred stillness of the
mountains in their true dimension, and the intense green of the pines intertwined with spots of color that accompany the slow sequence of the seasons.
The town is easily reached both from the Tyrrhennian coast as well as the Adriatic. It is close to the toll way exits of A-24, and A-25, reached by
the panoramic roadway 5.5 bis, and by an efficient bus system from the main cities.
It is among the best-equipped winter resorts of the Apennines. It guarantees consistent, long-lasting natural snowfall, as well as ultra-modern snowmaking
system. The professionalism and competence of ski instructors together with adequate infrastructures make for stupendous days of sport and
relaxation both for skiers and vacationers.
The summer season emphasizes the natural splendor of Ovindoli: uncontaminated nature, superior quality of the air, water, and land make the town
a natural refuge for tourists from many cities. The hum and glum of everyday city life fades away in Ovindoli, and sports enthusiasts can practice paragliding,
